L’objectif est de montrer à tous les jeunes de l’île qu’il existe une myriade de formations possibles après le collège ou le lycée et de leur éviter l’erreur qu’ont commis avant eux tant de jeunes, partis des espoirs plein la tête et revenus rapidement sur leur île, désillusionnés et sans diplôme.
Ils pourront avoir une meilleure approche de l’orientation professionnelle qui leur conviendrait le mieux, ainsi que du lieu où cette formation est disponible. Plusieurs représentants d’universités étrangères seront également présents.
L’information ne se limitera pas à l’orientation professionnelle. Elle prendra également en compte les différents dispositifs d’aide aux étudiants, comme les bourses, les possibilités de logements en cité universitaire et les prêts bancaires disponibles pour les étudiants. Dans ce dernier domaine, la Collectivité a sollicité les banques locales afin qu’elles mettent en place un crédit étudiant à taux zéro, garanti par la Collectivité.
Les personnes à la recherche d’un emploi sont également invitées à Cap Avenir, où elles pourront s’informer sur les formations qui pourraient leur convenir.
Une campagne d’informations est en cours de lancement et les organisateurs espèrent que tous les jeunes concernés répondront à l’invitation de Cap Avenir.

Parmi les invités, on trouve le Centre d’information et d’orientation de la Guadeloupe, le campus guadeloupéen de Fouillole, le CROUS, la Cité des Métiers de Guadeloupe, le régiment du service militaire adapté (RSMA), le CNED, le CFA de la Guadeloupe, plusieurs centres de formation, le GRETA, de nombreux chefs d’entreprises, la CCISM, mais aussi des représentants de l’Université des Îles Vierges Américaines, de la West Indies University et de l’Université de Tallahassee, en Floride.

« Je tiens d’abord à vous remercier d’avoir répondu présent à notre invitation ; le thème de cette conférence de presse est la présentation d’une manifestation appelée « cap avenir », organisée par le service Jeunesse de la Collectivité, qui se déroulera les 5 et 6 février prochains entre 8h et 16h, à la salle Omnisports de Galis Bay.
Ces deux journées se sont inscrites dans le cadre d'une réflexion que la Collectivité a lancée l’an dernier afin d’élaborer, avec l’ensemble des acteurs concernés, des mesures qui permettront une meilleure intégration sociale et professionnelle des élèves des collèges et du lycée.
Cette opération, qui est une première à Saint-Martin, est en fait un forum de l’orientation, de la formation, de l’emploi et des métiers, qui va permettre aux collégiens et lycéens de mieux appréhender un moment décisif dans leur carrière, je parle bien sûr de leur orientation professionnelle.
Les difficultés liées au choix de l’orientation sont de notoriété publique, et nous avons souhaité, en partenariat avec les nombreux invités de ce forum, faciliter ce choix en permettant aux jeunes de rencontrer des professionnels de l’orientation, ainsi que des représentants de l’université des Iles vierges américaines, de la West university et de l’université de Tallahassee, en Floride.
La formation professionnelle étant une des réponses au casse-tête de l’orientation, le centre d’information et d’orientation de la Guadeloupe, le campus guadeloupéen de Fouillole, le CROUS, la Cité des métiers de Guadeloupe, le RSMA, le CNED, le CFA de la Guadeloupe, plusieurs centres de formation, le GRETA, seront présents pour répondre aux interrogations des jeunes, et leur apporter les réponses adéquates.
De nombreux chefs d’entreprises ainsi que la CCISM seront également présents afin d’apporter leur expertise et donner leur sentiment quant aux débouchés qui correspondent à l’évolution du marché actuel.
Des informations liées aux dispositifs d’aides aux étudiants seront aussi livrées lors de ces deux journées, à l’instar des bourses, des possibilités de logements en Cité universitaire, ou encore des prêts bancaires pour les étudiants.
L’esprit de Cap avenir, c’est une véritable rencontre et un échange entre les collégiens, lycéens et demandeurs d’emploi, et des spécialistes de l’orientation et de l’emploi, afin que ces jeunes fassent le bon choix professionnel.
La Collectivité, via son service Jeunesse, a pris la mesure des difficultés rencontrées par les jeunes dans leur décision professionnelle, et apporte aujourd’hui des réponses concrètes en organisant ce Cap avenir. Notre jeunesse, c’est notre avenir, c’est notre capital : la Collectivité a parfaitement conscience que les jeunes sont aujourd'hui confrontés aux défis d'un monde en crise qui n’épargne personne et qui les touche particulièrement. Il nous faut à nous, responsables politiques, leur tendre la main et trouver les moyens d'une politique de la jeunesse qui ne soit pas de l'assistanat, mais qui permette à chaque jeune de se construire un avenir professionnel digne de ce nom. »
"On February 5th and 6th, the Youth Affairs Department of the Collectivité of Saint-Martin is organizing a forum entitled CAP AVENIR. The event is designed to provide young people with the maximum of information on employment possibilities as well as opportunities for Higher education. It is primarily destined to an audience from the middle schools, high schools, and the unemployed. The public at large is also welcome, especially, parents of children who are in high school.
This forum is a first for the Collectivité and it is driven by the policy that requires that the administration provide our young people with all of the tools necessary for their success in the job market.
This is essentially why we have chosen the slogan “Define Your Future” for this event. We hope that when the participants leave CAP Avenir that they will have a clearer vision as to career choices, which schools are better adapted to their aspirations and how to plan for their future in the job market.
Invited to exhibit at this event are organizations from the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Metropolitan France as well as from the Guadeloupe and Martinique. Institutions of higher education such as the University of Antilles Guyane, University of Sint Maarten, as well as schools from Canada, Florida and France are also invited.
Professional training organizations such as GRETA, CFA Saint Martin, Comptoir des Iles and institutions that counsel and orient youngsters will be on hand to counsel young on issues regarding job training and preparation for the job market. This information can range from very simple but fundamental things such as how to interview, dress for an interview or on how to put together a CV to perfecting their written and spoken language. Businesses from both sides have been invited to inform participants about the careers that are available within their organizations and the criteria that are important for them in a future employee. Bank representatives will provide information on the financing aspects of funding tuition for university or trade school. The Collectivité will be represented and we will be able to present young people with all of the various aid packages and help that the administration has put together in the above areas.
The question might be asked, why are we doing this? The answer is simple. We are doing this in order to open new doors and avenues for our students. We have found that many of our parents and young people are unprepared for the challenges that a student may face when they leave home and enter the university environment. This is resulting in a large number of dropouts and discouraged young people.
Last year the Collectivité awarded financial aid to 335 students bond for university and trade schools to the tune of 662,900 Euros. Special scholarships were also awarded to 14 students who graduated from the Lycée with honours in the amount of 42,000 Euros. There is also a financial aid program that is destined to the Lycéens to help them purchase school supplies and tools for those who are involved in the trade sectors. This year 60 students were awarded a total of 43,300 Euros under this program. Despite this significant amount of funds that have been disbursed to help our young people there will be some who will encounter problems.
Some of the problems that burden our young people and their families are issues that centre around adapting to a new environment, issues of budgeting, financing school tuition, as well as, educational orientation. Students also have no real sense of the amount of effort that it will take to succeed in a chosen stream. It is obvious, that in order to remedy the situation that there needs to be better planning before the university stage both in career choice and logistical preparation. With this forum we hope to answer many of those questions.
We also hope that CAP AVENIR will open new avenues in career choices for our students as well as inform them as to the job possibilities that are open or will open in the job market here on Saint Martin.
For young people who may have left school with or without a degree we also want to provide them with the maximum of information so that they can either complete their education through university or professional training or provide them with help to enter the job market.
CAP Avenir is organized as a two day job, professional training, and educational fair. For each of the two days there is a specific audience that is being targeted. On Friday, the 5th we hope to host all of the students from the junior and high schools from both sides of the island. That means the three colleges, the Lycée as well as the some of the upper class men from the high schools on the Southern side of the island.
Day two, Saturday, February 6th is dedicated primarily to those who are interested in pursuing their education, or in professional training. Youngsters who have left school and are unsure about what their options are also invited to attend on Saturday. Parents are also encouraged to attend the forum with their children because there will be workshops and information sessions to help them and their children plan the next step in their career.
This occasion, is also an opportunity for the professionals in the various sectors to encounter a large cross section of the population of Saint-Martin. It will allow many the opportunities to encounter a part of the workforce that they might not have had access to.
We have a number of partners who have been involved in planning this event including our counterparts from the Southern part of island in the Departments of Education and Youth Affairs. The Inter-Professional Chamber and National Education have also played key roles in helping us as well as the Collectivité’s Youth Council members, many of whom are currently involved in trying to resolve the issues that this forum touches upon.
CAP AVENIR is once again slated for February 5 and 6 at the OmniSports Centre in Galisbay between the hours of 9:00am and 4:00pm. I want to encourage our young people and parents to take part in this important event because we owe it to our young people to provide them with the tools and information that will improve their chances of success."
