An active participation of Saint-Martin in workshops
The high-level mass on biodiversity and climate change, organized from the 22 to the 25 October 2014 as a continuation of the 2008 meeting, brought together 200 representatives from the European overseas collectivities in Guadeloupe, whose delegation Saint-Martin, led by the 34 Vice-President Ramona Connor.
Jointly organized by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the European Commission, the French Government, the Guadeloupe Region, the British Virgin Islands (BVI), the OCTA ) And the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the main objectives of the conference were to halt the loss of biodiversity, promote the green and blue economy and mobilize new sources of funding. Concrete proposals to tackle the issue of climate change in the outermost regions (ORs) and the overseas countries and territories (OCTs) have been put forward in order to constitute the new roadmap for the coming years.
The Community of Saint Martin, represented by the XNUM Vice-President Ramona Connor was able to intervene during the workshops initiated the first two days of the meeting. These workshops brought together more than 2 experts on topics as varied as green and blue growth, research, resilience to climate change, and so on.
Through the various workshops, members of the delegation were able to defend the point of view of the territory and thus allow the inscription on the road map of the peculiarities of Saint Martin. Indeed, while trying to adopt a common position with the other French ORs in the Caribbean, Saint-Martin has focused its particular interests by actively participating in the drafting of the political message.
In addition, our Community has been able to highlight its cooperation project with the Caribbean and more precisely with the geographical subregion of Saba, Saint Eustatius, Anguilla, Saint Barthelemy and Sint Maarten, which is confronted with the same problems environmental. In this regard, discussions were held between the delegation of Saint-Martin and the Senator of Saint-Barth, Michel Magras, on various possibilities for cooperation in the field of fisheries and biodiversity. The two islands wish to renew closer ties.
A meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biodiversity (UN), Mr. Braulio Ferreria de Souza Dias, also presented our bi-national island, and the difference in European statutes, RUP and OCT. The delegation of Saint-Martin also transmitted to it the European Territorial Cooperation Program (PO-CTE) between Saint-Martin and Sint Maarten, and the cooperation project with the Caribbean subregion. Finally, an interview with the Minister of the Environment of the British Virgin Islands, Dr. the Honorable Kedrick D. Pickering, was the occasion to present the project of cooperation of the subregion.
