The President and the Prefect praise the action of the Green Brigade
President Aline Hanson and Prefect Anne Laubies received the 20 brigadiers of the Green Brigade on Friday, 22 January 2016, in community, to congratulate them for the first results obtained in the cleaning of the littoral. In charge of ridding the beaches of the Sargasses algae, the brigadiers were encouraged in their mission of public service.

Framed by the Symphorien insertion center in Quartier d'Orléans, chaired by Madame Rousseau, the 20 brigadiers verts are deployed on the beaches of the northern and northeastern shores of Saint-Martin, with the objective of collecting algae sargasses Which run aground and pollute the landscape. This marine pollution is not only detrimental to the environment and tourism, but also causes worrying repercussions on the health of exposed residents (eye irritation, respiratory difficulties, nausea and headaches), mainly due to gases emitted by Stagnant algae, the oxidation they cause and their pestilential odor. The community and the state have therefore mobilized to find common solutions.

Among these solutions, the green brigade that cleans the beaches on a daily basis has achieved good results, and in a few weeks the coastline has regained its welcoming appearance.

Both the president and the prefect hailed the work done so far and encouraged the police to not loose their efforts. Everyone assured the community and the state of their satisfaction to carry out this work in favor of the territory, its inhabitants and tourists. The Green Brigade is active for a renewable one-year period, its priority being the collection of seaweed, but its agents will also be trained to become ambassadors for the selective sorting of waste, under the direction of the Environment and Which already oversees the seaweed collection planning and will subsequently guide them in their mission of sensitizing the population to the sorting of household waste.

Furthermore, the symposium organized by the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) on the upgrading of Sargasses algae on Friday, 29, highlighted the need to address the issue of the treatment of And to find reclamation possibilities beneficial for the environment and useful for the impacted territories. Several processes were highlighted, with ADEME responsible for selecting the most relevant and making them operational.

An interministerial mission on the impact of sargassais algae in Saint-Martin

President Aline Hanson received in college on Tuesday 26 January 2016, Messrs. Tristan Florenne of the IGA, François Guerber of CGEDD and François Cola-Belcour of CGAAER, members of the interministerial mission to study the phenomenon of " Stranded algae and to contribute to its resolution.

It was at the initiative of the Minister for Overseas Territories and the ministers responsible for ecology and agriculture respectively that this interministerial mission was established. The three mission officers met with local authorities throughout the week to better understand the extent of the phenomenon and the actions carried out on the territory during the 2015 year.

President Hanson mentioned in a preamble the involvement of the services of the Collectivité, which was strongly mobilized in the face of the exceptional nature of the phenomenon, and despite the lack of adapted tools.

"At first, it was the Community that invested financial resources in the purchase of equipment and punctual cleaning services. We did the best we could, we had to act and reassure the population. "

The president spoke about the impact of this marine pollution, and reminded the public of the harmful effects of algae, in particular for the residents of the affected areas, such as in Cul de Sac Bay, who alerted the public authorities. The human and material resources committed by the community and their cost were reviewed. In view of the needs, the Chairperson requested that the Green Brigade responsible for beach cleaning be maintained with the support of the State.

Present at the meeting, DGS Philippe Millon, expressed the will of the Community to be a candidate for the experimentation of innovative devices, living to contain algae offshore or to collect them at sea.

In conclusion, the Chairperson recalled the need to continue the joint efforts (State - COM - ARS) of collection, and to look at the upgrading of this marine litter.
