Work completed at the St. Martin slaughterhouse
Saint Martin LogoThe Saint-Martin slaughterhouse construction is complete.
The Collectivité of Saint-Martin announces the completion of the rehabilitation work carried out on the Saint-Martin slaughterhouse. This work, which included the restoration of the existing structure and the development of the facilities, as well as staff training, has enabled this technical facility to be put back into operation.
After several years of technical, administrative, and financial challenges, the Saint-Martin slaughterhouse has been fully delivered, with operational facilities that meet all applicable specifications and standards. A final inspection took place in December 2025, attended by representatives of the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), the Prefecture of Saint-Martin Saint Barthélemy, the Directorate of Food, Agriculture and Forestry (DAAF), and project partners. This inspection confirmed the proper functioning of the funded equipment, a crucial condition for securing European subsidies and definitively guaranteeing the financing plan.
A structuring project, managed over the long term
The work encompassed both the buildings and all the technical equipment necessary for the operation of the slaughterhouse. Initially conceived as an extension, the project had to be significantly reorganized to also address the existing operational issues. This reconfiguration required the issuance of new tenders and an adjustment to the schedule.
The infrastructure rehabilitation cost €1,744,810.55. This investment was subsidized to the tune of €1,507,689.67 by the EAFRD (European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development). The Collectivité 's share amounted to €237,120.88. The project management costs totaled €120,690, of which €108,621 was subsidized by the EAFRD. The Collectivité 's share was therefore €12,069.
Despite the challenges, the project was able to be completed thanks to rigorous management and the constant involvement of the elected officials committed to this project and the management in charge within the Quality of Life and Ecological Transition delegation.
Trained agents for a sustainable and efficient tool
Alongside the delivery of the infrastructure, the staff responsible for operating the slaughterhouse underwent specialized training at a leading institution, enabling them to acquire the skills necessary for optimal operation. They are now ready to further develop their expertise to ensure sustainable operation that meets health and safety requirements and the industry's expectations.
The reopening of the abattoir is a crucial step in recognizing the value of farmers' work, supporting local production, and strengthening the region's food self-sufficiency. This facility is first and foremost a tool for farmers, designed to meet their needs and support the development of their activities.
The President of the Saint-Martin Public Industrial and Commercial Establishment (EPIC), Valérie Fonrose, and the Director of the slaughterhouse, Elie Touzé, wish to thank all the institutional, technical, and financial stakeholders who contributed to the success of this project. While the path was complex, collective effort enabled them to see it through to completion and deliver today a facility long awaited by the region.
